Excuses or Results: The Mindset Shift That Changes Everything

There is a principle I come back to more than any other when I am working with entrepreneurs, and it is this: excuses or results, you choose.

It sounds blunt. It is meant to. Because in my experience, the single biggest determinant of whether someone succeeds or stays stuck is not talent, not opportunity, and not luck. It is their willingness to take complete ownership of their outcomes.

Every single day, you are making a choice. You are either finding reasons why something cannot work, or you are finding a way to make it work. Both require energy. Both require creativity. The question is which direction you are pointing yours.

The Comfort of Excuses

Excuses are seductive because they protect the ego. If the reason you have not grown your business is the economy, your competition, your team, or your circumstances, then the failure is not yours. It belongs to something external. Something outside your control.

And in the short term, that feels safe. It removes the discomfort of personal responsibility. But in the long term, it is devastating. Because if the problem is always external, the solution is always out of your hands. You become a passenger in your own life.

I am not saying that external challenges do not exist. Of course they do. The economy is tough. Good staff are hard to find. Markets shift. But the entrepreneurs who break through are not the ones operating in a vacuum free from obstacles. They are the ones who refuse to let obstacles become their identity.

What Radical Ownership Looks Like

Radical ownership is not about blame. It is not about beating yourself up when things go wrong. It is about recognising that your response to any situation is within your control, even when the situation itself is not.

If your best employee leaves, you can make excuses about loyalty, or you can examine whether your leadership, your culture, or your compensation made leaving the rational choice. If a client stops working with you, you can blame their budget, or you can ask whether you were delivering enough value to justify the investment. For a deeper look at how to build systems that do not depend on your personal heroics, read How to Build Systems That Run Your Business.

This is not comfortable. But it is powerful. Because every honest assessment creates an opportunity for genuine improvement.

The Inner World Drives the Outer World

One of the principles I teach is that your inner world creates your outer world. The results you see in your business are a reflection of the beliefs, habits, and standards you hold internally.

If you believe that success is hard and rare, you will unconsciously sabotage opportunities. If you believe that you are not good enough to play at a higher level, you will avoid the actions that would prove otherwise. And if you tolerate mediocrity in yourself, you will tolerate it in your team and your results. This is why clarity on your purpose matters so much, something I explore in depth in The North Star Principle: Why Clarity Beats Hustle Every Time.

The shift happens when you decide, consciously and deliberately, that results matter more than comfort. That growth matters more than excuses. That the temporary discomfort of honest self-assessment is a price worth paying for a life and business you are genuinely proud of.

A Challenge for This Week

Here is my challenge to you. Pick one area of your business where you have been making excuses. Revenue growth, team performance, your health, whatever it is. And ask yourself one question: if I took complete ownership of this, what would I do differently starting tomorrow?

Write the answer down. Then do it. Not next month. Tomorrow.
